Description

The Hamburg Green Roof Subsidy supports voluntary roof and facade greening in the Hanseatic City, thereby contributing to the improvement of the urban microclimate, increased water retention, and evaporative cooling. Owners or leaseholders of residential and non-residential buildings as well as infrastructure structures can apply for a one-time grant of up to €100,000 per building. Private users receive a funding rate of 60% of the eligible costs, while companies benefit depending on their size with up to 60% (SMEs), 50% (medium-sized), or 40% (large enterprises). A combination with solar energy systems is supported via the substructure with a surcharge of up to €50/m², whereas PV modules and solar thermal collectors are excluded. Accompanying measures such as root protection layers and structural improvements are also partially funded.

Applications can be submitted continuously before the start of construction or delivery services and are characterized by a project duration of up to 24 months. Eligible expenses include, in addition to the actual greening, completion and maintenance costs as well as structural assessments. A minimum greening area of 20 m² (roof) or 10 m² (facade) and ownership or leasehold rights in Hamburg are prerequisites. Required for the application are, among other documents, a site plan, a project description, a detailed cost breakdown, and proof of qualification in case of self-performance. Evaluation is based on the justified area size, climate adaptation effect, and ecological diversity. This funding by the Authority for Environment, Climate, Energy and Agriculture, implemented by IFB Hamburg, offers a practical approach for more greenery in the city.
