Description

The Heimatpreis Bayern honors outstanding commitment to the preservation and promotion of Bavarian traditions, customs, and regional heritage. Volunteers, associations, non-profit organizations, public institutions, or private individuals active throughout Bavaria can be nominated through an informal submission—at any time and without an application deadline. Initiatives from the fields of culture, media, labor, social affairs, as well as projects that strengthen social cohesion and democratic coexistence, are supported. This award highlights the diverse efforts of individuals and groups who keep cultural values alive and convey them through the care of folk music, the preservation of historic architectural and natural landscapes, or innovative homeland stewardship.

Eligible to propose candidates are district administrators and mayors as well as any private individual who nominates an institution, association, or individuals with justified background information. A specialist jury selects the recipients based on criteria such as outstanding merits for the Bavarian homeland, sustainable preservation of customs, engagement in the regional cultural landscape, and civic commitment to social cohesion. A continuous candidate pool ensures that submissions are considered in subsequent years as well. Awardees are honored annually per administrative district and receive the symbolic porcelain lion as a mark of special recognition. The Heimatpreis Bayern not only acknowledges achievements but also sets impulses for forward-looking projects that keep Bavarian identity vibrant and initiate further participation in homeland culture.
