Description
The EU call "Improving climate and weather models for Africa" supports transnational research and development projects with African and European partners. The aim is the tailored improvement of climate and weather models for Africa to strengthen adaptation measures and risk management. A consortium must consist of at least three independent legal entities from different EU Member States or associated countries, with at least 30% of the partners based in African Union Member States. Public institutions, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations can receive a grant covering 100% of eligible costs (personnel costs, material and equipment costs, travel expenses, subcontractor services) of up to €7 million per project. Ineligible costs include, among others, mass production and real estate purchases. The project duration is 36 months, and submissions are possible until 15 April 2026. The application form (HE RIA), detailed budget table, and CVs of key personnel are required.
Evaluation focuses on innovation content, relevance for Africa, as well as quality and efficiency of implementation. Selected projects are expected to significantly improve the forecast horizon and model accuracy for extremes such as rainfall through the use of advanced methods—from observational data analysis and AI/ML techniques to the utilization of supercomputing. At the same time, local capacity building is promoted to provide African research institutions with tools and expertise for independent progress in the long term. Close cooperation between universities, meteorological services, and regional climate centers on both continents aims to strengthen synergies with existing EU initiatives and ensure sustainable implementation of the research results.
