Description

The EU-funded research project “Integrating New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) to advance biomedical research and regulatory testing” focuses on a comprehensive shift away from animal-based methods towards human-relevant, animal-free testing approaches. Within a budget framework of €5–8 million per project, innovative technologies such as in vitro assays, organoid models, organ-on-chip systems, iPSC applications, virtual twins, and AI-supported models are developed and validated. The entire spectrum of biomedical research is covered – from basic research through clinical translation to the regulatory safety assessment of pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and medical devices. Funding is provided to small and medium-sized enterprises, universities, research institutions, nonprofit and public organizations based in EU member states or associated countries. A prerequisite is the cooperation of multiple partners from research, industry, and regulatory authorities, participation in cluster networks, as well as an open market consultation prior to application submission. The funding amount covers 100% of R&D costs, personnel, consumables, subcontractors, and travel expenses (exception: real estate and debt refinancing). The submission deadline is 16/04/2026.

Evaluation is conducted by independent experts based on the degree of innovation, scientific excellence, relevance to health research, methodological quality, and expected regulatory impact. Funded consortia commit to joint networking and dissemination activities within a dedicated work package. The goal is to provide robust and scalable NAM platforms enabling industry and regulatory authorities to generate human-relevant data, facilitate regulatory approvals, and ultimately advance the transition away from animal testing.
