Description

The Karl Schwarzschild Postdoctoral Program of the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics Potsdam (AIP) supports outstanding postdoctoral researchers in the fields of extragalactic astrophysics as well as stars, the sun, and exoplanets. In an international selection process, scientists who have obtained their doctorate within the past five years and wish to conduct an independent research program at the AIP are honored. The award includes remuneration according to TV-L E14 as well as a research budget of €20,000 over three years. The project duration is generally three years and can, in individual cases, be extended up to five years. This prize further strengthens the AIP’s tradition as a leading center of astrophysics in Germany and expands the scientific diversity at the Potsdam location.

Interested postdoctoral researchers develop their own research project and supervise students at the Leibniz Institute for Astrophysics. Scientific excellence, the independence of the research program, and commitment to student supervision are central evaluation criteria. Applications can be submitted continuously; the call alternates annually between the two research fields. Only material costs within the provided budget are funded. The program is aimed at individuals with a completed doctorate and creates excellent conditions for career entry in international astrophysics. By combining independent research, innovative supervision, and an attractive remuneration model, the AIP lays the foundation for sustainable scientific success.
