Description
AI Initiative: Funding on the Topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The German Research Foundation (DFG) funds outstanding research projects nationwide in the field of Artificial Intelligence. As a strategic funding initiative, this program aims to closely link AI methods research with basic research across all disciplines. The focus is on establishing new Emmy Noether groups, which provide highly qualified researchers with early independent career opportunities. In parallel, the systematic development of extensive, high-quality data corpora is supported, serving as the basis for the (further) development of AI methods. Funding is provided as a continuously announced grant and offers educational and public institutions throughout Germany new opportunities to advance innovative AI projects.
The program is aimed at researchers at universities and research institutions who have an institutional affiliation and can demonstrate a clear research focus in the field of Artificial Intelligence. Funding objectives include, in addition to attracting and retaining top talent in Emmy Noether groups, the development of FAIR- and CARE-compliant data corpora, which are made available in national infrastructures such as the NFDI. The fourth call for Emmy Noether groups on the topic “Methods of Artificial Intelligence” was published on April 1, 2026, marking the final of four rounds. Applications can be submitted immediately; a DFG jury decides on the selection. Interested institutions benefit from tailored funding that equally strengthens research & innovation, science, and digitalization.
