Description

The Clinical Research funding program supports innovative, temporally and financially clearly defined projects in human and veterinary medicine at Austrian research institutions. Project proposals can be submitted continuously and are aimed at scientists with proven qualifications, sufficient work capacity, and access to the necessary infrastructure. The goal is to gain new scientific insights and to optimize diagnostic as well as therapeutic procedures in clinical practice. Funding is provided for personnel costs (including postdoc and senior postdoc rates as well as partial financing of one’s own position) as well as material, equipment, travel, and other project-specific expenses. Cooperation with developing countries is supported from funds for “other costs,” provided that the partners are affiliated with recognized local institutions. All funding amounts undergo evaluation by international experts, with criteria such as degree of innovation, methodology, relevance to clinical practice, research excellence, and ethical, gender, and sustainability aspects determining the grant decision.

The project duration is limited to a maximum of 48 months; a cost-neutral extension of up to 12 months is possible. A positive ethics vote or a fundamental endorsement from the responsible ethics committee is mandatory; additional requirements apply for animal studies. Submission is made via the electronic application portal elane, where the project description, abstract, publication records, CVs, budget breakdown, and other attachments (including Clinical Trial Synopsis and Sustainability Statement) must be uploaded. The implementation of resource-saving measures in the research process—such as train instead of plane, optimization of sample volumes, sustainable laboratory practices, and efficient computer use—is actively promoted and evaluated within the FWF strategy for ecological sustainability.
