Composition Funding of the City of Vienna

The Composition Funding of the City of Vienna has continuously supported the creative work of composers residing in the Vienna city area since 2023. Funding is granted exclusively for works that have not yet been premiered in the fields of New Music, Improvisation and Electronics, Music Drama (Opera, Music Theatre, Film), cross-genre contemporary music, as well as Jazz. Designed as a grant, the program deliberately focuses on fostering artistic diversity and innovative forms of expression in contemporary music. The Cultural Department of the City of Vienna (MA 7) ensures fair allocation of funds and places special emphasis on inclusion, quality, and fair working conditions for all involved.

A prerequisite for receiving this funding is residency in Vienna as well as the submission of a composition not previously premiered in the aforementioned categories. There is no fixed submission deadline, allowing applications to be submitted at any time and enabling timely support of compositional work. Monthly disbursements are announced annually within the framework of the city council resolutions. With this program, the City of Vienna aims to promote new musical perspectives, strengthen the local cultural scene, and provide Viennese composers with sustainable incentives for premieres.
