Description

The Viola Foundation Walter Witte organizes a nationwide composition competition specifically aimed at young composers, focusing on new works for the viola. The goal is to expand the repertoire with original yet technically feasible contributions and thereby sustainably promote interest in viola music. In regular calls for submissions, specifications regarding form and instrumentation are communicated, allowing all participants to engage in creative sonic experiments with the instrument’s characteristic timbre. An independent expert jury evaluates the submissions according to established criteria, ensuring a fair and competent selection process.

As part of the award, cash prizes of €3,000 for first place, €2,000 for second place, and €1,000 for third place are granted. The evaluation particularly considers the originality of the composition, its technical feasibility, and the convincing incorporation of the viola’s sound character. With its prize money, the competition not only provides creative impulses but also supports the artistic development of the winners in the long term. The submitted works may be freely used by the foundation for public premieres, thereby giving young talents a platform beyond the competition and allowing audiences to experience fresh compositions.
