Description

The cooperation with public music schools in Berlin enables uncomplicated financial support for children and young people from low-income or socially disadvantaged families. Public music schools and their non-profit support associations can access flat-rate subsidies, which are accounted for semi-annually in tabular form. Eligible to apply are institutions that cover tuition fees or rental fees for instruments. The basis for funding is the strong interest of the students in making music, regular practice, and demonstrable learning progress. Socially disadvantaged individuals include, among others, holders of a Berlin Pass, families with an income up to 20% above the social benefit threshold (hardship cases possible), as well as refugee children who are recognized as hardship cases without further examination. Hardship cases in exceptional situations must be particularly justified.

The Markstein Foundation aims to strengthen music lessons as a contribution to personal development and to promote broad-based musical education. The selection of students worthy of support is the responsibility of the local music schools or support associations, thereby reducing the administrative burden for the foundation. Applications can be submitted throughout the year; essential to this is close communication between teachers, administration, and the support association. With this model, the foundation ensures sustainable participation in musical education and opens the way for young musicians to instrumental lessons—regardless of financial barriers.
