Description
The funding aims at technological, economic, and social innovations for the circular economy and resource efficiency of major primary and secondary raw material flows in Germany. The focus is on continuous circular management throughout the entire product lifecycle – from design through manufacturing and use to recovery. Projects with high practical relevance and demonstrable effectiveness that contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss, and water scarcity are supported. In particular, approaches that overcome linear models (“take, make, waste”) and establish new value chains through innovative business models (e.g., platform and sharing concepts), smart technical processes, or cross-industry networks are emphasized. Educational concepts for imparting systemic thinking and digitally supported methods in the agricultural, food, or construction materials sectors are also eligible for funding. Examples of successful projects range from phosphorus recovery from sewage sludge through palladium-free electroplating to sustainable cultivation and fertilization methods.
Eligible applicants include companies, start-ups, founders, research institutions, as well as non-profit and public institutions with headquarters or operations in Germany. A convincing project orientation in the field of circular economy and resource efficiency, as well as a viable economic concept, are prerequisites. Evaluation is based on the degree of innovation, practical relevance, and economic viability. Submissions are possible year-round via the online portal, offering flexibility in project planning. The funding is provided as a grant to promote the development and implementation of forward-looking solutions in the fields of environmental/nature conservation, climate protection, research & innovation, digitalization, and energy efficiency & climate protection.
