The KulturKometen Award honors outstanding cultural projects in schools in the Hanover region every two years and promotes innovative ideas beyond rigid curricula. Educational institutions from Lower Saxony can compete for prize money totaling €10,000 with their pedagogical and artistic initiatives in the fields of music, theater, dance, film, literature, or visual arts. A distinguished jury composed of representatives from the regional cultural scene, including cultural officers, creative professionals, and educators, evaluates the submissions based on the criteria of creativity of project conception, originality and innovation, coherent overall concept, and cross-disciplinary and cross-subject approaches. The goal is to inspire teachers, school administrations, and students to independently shape cultural education processes and establish them sustainably.

The next call for applications will open in autumn 2025. During a ceremonial award presentation, the top three submissions, as well as a possible special prize, will be publicly honored. The funding targets schools that implement projects already realized or in planning that go beyond the requirements of the curriculum. It offers the opportunity to collaborate in workshops with experts, strengthen network structures, and beneficially link everyday school life with extracurricular cultural offerings. Thus, KulturKometen provides a platform to recognize students’ commitment to cultural education, promote teamwork, and introduce new impulses to the educational landscape in Lower Saxony.
