Description
The EU-funded LEADER initiative in Saarland follows an innovative bottom-up approach that empowers local actors to independently develop strategies for the development of their home region. The focus is on projects related to agricultural and rural development, climate protection, environmental and nature conservation, as well as energy efficiency. Through inter-municipal cooperation, the aim is to establish long-term sustainable processes that address demographic change, conserve resources, and create future-proof structures. The funding particularly supports exemplary approaches that go beyond mere investment financing and provide space for sustainable concepts.
Target groups include not only municipal institutions and public organizations but also associations, interest groups, and private individuals whose project location is within one of the five LEADER regions of Saarland. Participation of locally anchored action groups (LAG) is a central prerequisite, as is a contribution to sustainable development and a requirement for own funds. The funding rate varies between 25% and 80%, and applications can be submitted until December 31, 2027. Selection is based on alignment with the local development strategy, degree of innovation, economic viability, as well as regional relevance and sustainability. Transparent and independent evaluation by the LAG decision-making bodies ensures the quality of funding decisions and promotes sustainable added value for the rural areas of Saarland.
