Description
The call "Leveraging long-term field experiments and other datasets to develop AI-ready decision support systems for sustainable soil management" supports innovative developments of AI-based platforms and tools for evidence-based soil management decisions. The goal is the harmonization and integration of long-term field experiment data (LTEs) and other relevant soil datasets within the EU to empower agricultural decision-makers and advisors to implement sustainable strategies for soil health, protection, and efficiency. Funding is available to companies, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, public bodies, cooperatives, interest groups, foundations, as well as individuals from EU member states or associated countries within a competitive, multi-phase research and innovation process. The grant, provided as a subsidy, covers 100% of personnel, subcontractor, material, and travel costs as well as expenses for financial instruments to third parties (FSTP). A multi-actor approach with at least three independent partners from different countries is mandatory to enable broad application in at least 50 representative field trial stations. With a funding rate of 100% and a funding amount of up to €9 million, projects have comprehensive resources at their disposal.
Projects should be based on standardized protocols and provide open, interoperable systems that enable data exchange, access, and sharing. Core evaluation criteria under Horizon Europe Excellence include the level of innovation, quality of data harmonization, credibility of effects, as well as efficiency of the work plan and risk management. Submissions from grant recipients must be made electronically by 23 September 2026. Required documents include, among others, the standard application template (AF_HE-RIA-IA), the project description (Part B), financing plan, ethics self-assessment, CVs of key personnel, and a market consultation report. With this call, the European Commission supports the mission "A Soil Deal for Europe" and the EU Soil Strategy 2030, aiming to transfer robust, digitized soil information into agricultural practice.
