Local Journalism

The Alfred Toepfer Foundation F.V.S. supports independent reporting at the local level in Germany through its program for the promotion of local journalism. Through continuously possible applications, journalists as well as municipal and regional media organizations receive financial grants to realize research projects, local reports, and editorial innovations. The goal is to strengthen a diverse and critical media landscape that promotes social cohesion and informs citizens directly on site. The foundation, established in 1931 in Hamburg, provides annual funds amounting to approximately €2.2 to 2.4 million for statutory purposes and thus makes a significant contribution to the long-term safeguarding of quality journalism in rural and urban-adjacent regions.

Both individuals and companies from the media, culture & media sectors who are sustainably committed to independent local reporting are eligible for funding. Applications can be submitted on an ongoing basis, allowing flexible responses to current developments or new project ideas. The Alfred Toepfer Foundation F.V.S. evaluates funding requests based on their substantive relevance, their societal contribution to strengthening democratic processes, and the quality of journalistic work. With a gender-neutral and inclusive approach, the program supports projects of varying sizes and ensures that regional journalism initiatives are strengthened comprehensively.
