Description

The Foundation for Self-Help Assistance for Addicts and Those at Risk of Addiction promotes nationwide navigator networks of addiction self-help, in which formerly substance-dependent individuals are trained as volunteer navigators. The goal is to establish and strengthen regional networks to provide individualized support to affected persons on their path to a substance-free life. A prerequisite for funding is registration in the navigator network and successful completion of navigator training offered by the professional association for drug and addiction assistance (FDR). Project sponsors can be non-profit organizations, interest groups, associations, or public institutions. Funding covers personnel expenses, material costs, training, travel expenses, and public relations. Applications and submissions are possible at any time and require a project description, a budget plan, and proof of the self-help organization.

The navigators share their own experiences in overcoming addiction and create a supportive social environment. They provide access to professional support services, connect with addiction counseling centers, medical rehabilitation, and self-help groups, and strengthen the autonomy of the individuals they accompany. Through long-term support and an interdisciplinary network, relapses are reduced and access to appropriate assistance is promoted. With manageable effort and indefinite funding, the program makes a sustainable contribution to social cohesion, health stability, and the strengthening of democratic self-organization in Germany.
