Description
The Low Vision Counseling service of the Frankfurt Foundation for the Blind and Visually Impaired offers manufacturer-independent, individually tailored expert advice for the optimal use of remaining vision. Appointments, held in Frankfurt am Main, are scheduled by arrangement and usually last one hour; the cost is 95 EUR per session. The focus is on assessing visual functions (refraction, visual acuity), determining reading ability, and analyzing contrast and lighting requirements. Additionally, participants receive well-founded recommendations on magnifying visual aids such as optical magnifiers, magnifying glasses, monocular telescopes, or electronic reading devices. The expertise of a specialized low vision counselor enables a customized selection of suitable aids to sustainably enhance independence in private, educational, and professional daily life. A current ophthalmological report (if available) as well as any visual aids already in use can be presented at the beginning; a medical referral is not required.
The program is aimed at visually impaired individuals of all ages from Hesse who wish to optimize their visual performance and improve their quality of life. Within approximately ten working days after the consultation, participants receive a detailed report including a possible prescription recommendation. This offering complements the comprehensive portfolio of the foundation, established in 1837, which in addition to this expert counseling also includes training and rehabilitation programs, supervised living arrangements, and cultural initiatives. Through barrier-free access to information, communication, and mobility, the foundation is committed to ensuring that blind and visually impaired people can actively participate in social life and secure their independence in the long term.
