Description
The nationwide grant program "Natural Climate Protection in Municipal Areas" of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) targets public institutions in rural areas. It supports investment measures on public, non-commercially used land with the aim of ecologically enhancing ecosystems, strengthening biodiversity, and increasing climate protection effects. Focus areas include, among others, near-natural greening, renaturation of water bodies, creation of field margins, and projects involving the removal of sealed surfaces. The program relies on the expertise of Zukunft – Umwelt – Gesellschaft gGmbH (ZUG) for administrative support and technical guidance.
Eligible to apply are municipalities as well as (inter)municipal associations with significant federal interest in their project, which would not be feasible to the required extent without federal funding. Prerequisites include legal and economic ownership or proof of dedicated use until the end of the binding period (usually 2045), voluntariness of the investment measures, provision of project data, participation in annual status meetings with the granting authority, and technical as well as economic competencies for project implementation. The funding rate ranges between 80% and 90%. Currently, the funding window is closed; applications cannot be submitted at this time. Funding applications are processed in two stages: initially via a project outline, followed by a formal application procedure through easy-Online.
