Description
In view of the approximately 500,000 nosocomial infections occurring annually in German healthcare facilities, this international award has recognized since 2013 outstanding scientific work and practical initiatives that contribute to optimizing hospital hygiene structures and preventing multidrug-resistant pathogens. Every two years, a prize sum of €50,000 is awarded to promote the development of new diagnostic, epidemiological, and therapeutic concepts. Particular recognition is given to measures establishing efficient surveillance and quality assurance systems, innovative studies on the microbiome, as well as strategies to reduce antibiotic-resistant infections, especially in intensive care settings.
Funding is provided to public and private institutions, educational providers, and individuals from clinics, rehabilitation centers, and research institutions who have implemented projects aimed at reducing nosocomial infections and combating multidrug-resistant germs. Selection is based on the effectiveness of organizational concepts, improvements in diagnostic procedures, and the practical applicability of results. The international call encourages interdisciplinary exchange and sets an important impetus for new collaborations. This award not only honors achievements already made but also serves as a catalyst for promising follow-up projects in the fields of health, research & innovation, science, as well as labor & social affairs.
