Description

The Checkpoint Charlie Foundation supports bilateral encounter projects between the State of Berlin and the United States of America through financial, ideological, and logistical assistance. Funded initiatives come from the fields of education, culture, media, commitment to social cohesion and democracy, as well as vocational training, employment, and social affairs. Eligible to apply are educational institutions, non-profit organizations, and private individuals who plan and implement transatlantic exchange and encounter programs. Funding is provided in the form of grants; continuous submission of funding applications is possible throughout the year. The allocation is usually decided quarterly by the Foundation’s board. Through its support, the Foundation aims to deepen German-American dialogue, strengthen intercultural learning, and build sustainable networks between Berlin and the USA.

For an application, applicants must submit a fully completed application form, accompanied by a detailed project description, a comprehensive cost calculation with costs per person and item, a program draft, and a list of participants. Submission must take place at least two weeks before the respective board meeting. A prerequisite for approval is compliance with the Foundation’s purpose and funding guidelines, as well as a clear focus on binational exchange between Berlin and the USA. Before applying, in the school sector it must be checked whether a grant from the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family can be utilized. The board’s decision does not create any legal entitlement to funding. Accounting is carried out using prescribed forms; unused funds must be returned. This funding program opens new opportunities for both the curious and experts to design transatlantic encounters in a sustainable and effective manner.
