The Dr. Ortwin Rusche Foundation Fund of the German Foundation for Heart Research annually supports patient-oriented research projects in the field of cardiac surgery in Germany. From the estate of Dr. med. Ortwin Rusche, €60,000 is available as a non-repayable grant along with a certificate to advance innovative projects in the area of thoracic, cardiac, and vascular surgery. The funding is awarded jointly with the German Society for Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery and is designed for a maximum duration of 24 months. The support aims to strengthen novel concepts in operative and clinical research that directly benefit patients and bridge the gap between laboratory and clinic.

Eligible to apply are scientists working in Germany who have not yet reached the age of 40 and can demonstrably work in the specified field. An application must not include identical submissions elsewhere. To apply, a curriculum vitae and a project description (maximum 20 pages) must be submitted. The deadline for electronic applications is annually on July 1 and is announced in advance via press release. Upon acceptance of the funding, the grantee commits to preparing both a detailed final report and a concise summary report for public relations purposes. Selection is based on scientific excellence, degree of innovation, and patient-related added value.
