Description

The Rudolf Augstein Foundation supports non-profit organizations in Germany and Austria that aim to sustainably strengthen independent and public-interest journalism. Projects with a critical or investigative approach are funded, which, in addition to research initiatives, also advance media innovations, journalistic infrastructures, or new business models. Applications can be submitted at any time; purely production-related content is not funded. The available funding amount is up to €400,000 and is granted as a subsidy. Requirements include the submission of a brief project outline, a digitally completed application form, and proof of non-profit status. The focus is on original approaches with clear potential to effect structural changes in the media landscape, and methods that are sustainable in the long term. In the selection process, alongside the professional expertise of those involved, willingness for critical reflection and continuous development is also evaluated.

The program is aimed at non-profit media organizations, journalistic initiatives, and emerging journalists who want to close gaps in public opinion formation with innovative concepts. Priority funding areas include investigative journalism, media innovation, and the establishment or optimization of journalistic infrastructures. The Foundation places importance on clear, viable project planning and a public-interest-oriented added value. Applicants usually receive feedback within twelve weeks of application submission. Upon completion of the project, a usage report including a financial overview and factual report must be submitted. In this way, the Rudolf Augstein Foundation promotes independent journalism and contributes to strengthening the foundations of a vibrant democracy in the digital age.
