Description

The Benedikt and Helene Schmittmann-Wahlen Foundation honors outstanding doctoral projects that impress through excellent scientific work and pronounced social commitment. The focus is on the personal support of doctoral candidates who address socially relevant issues and advance their own development in the process. The award includes the annually conferred Benedikt and Helene Schmittmann-Wahlen Scholarship, which is presented jointly with the University of Cologne in a ceremonial setting. Informal exchange formats create a free, self-organized network in which scholarship holders meet twice a year for intensive professional and social dialogue and continuously use the contacts made for mutual inspiration and support.

Funding is provided to individuals at German universities whose doctoral projects demonstrate clear social relevance. In addition to outstanding scientific achievements, applicants must demonstrate verifiable social engagement and plausibly explain the societal added value of their work. The selection is based on the criteria of scientific excellence, social relevance, and social commitment. The annual call for applications begins in summer; exact deadlines are published on the Foundation’s website. The goal is to create an inspiring environment in which committed early-career researchers are supported and networked not only professionally but also personally.
