Description

The scholarship program of the Gerda Henkel Foundation is aimed at outstandingly qualified doctoral candidates in the Historical Humanities in Germany. It supports dissertation projects in archaeology, history, historical Islamic studies, art history, legal history, prehistory and early history, as well as the history of science. A prerequisite is a degree qualifying for doctoral studies (Master’s or state examination) with an overall grade of 1.5 or better, as well as an age limit of 27 years at the time of graduation (exceptions are possible). Applications can be submitted online at any time and are reviewed by expert referees based on the examination results, the quality of the exposé, and the assessment in two specialist reviews. Decisions are made four times a year, and the processing time can be up to six months.

Over a period of up to 24 months, scholarship holders receive a monthly basic grant of €1,920 as well as, if applicable, an allowance for foreign stays and family. Additionally, travel expenses and material costs are provided as needed. Tuition fees, semester contributions, salaries, or pensions are not eligible for funding. The application documents include an exposé (maximum eight pages), a timeline and work plan, a detailed budget, a tabular CV, degree certificates, and two academic references. With this program, the Foundation aims to enable young scholars to pursue a focused and intensive doctoral phase, thereby strengthening excellent research careers in the Historical Humanities.
