Description

The "Quality Journalism: Content Diversity Promotion" is aimed at media owners of daily and weekly newspapers, online media, as well as magazines with predominantly editorial activities for an Austrian audience. Federal, public, and non-profit organizations can apply for a subsidy of up to 20% of the respective basic amount of the journalism funding. The goal is, on the one hand, to strengthen regional relevance through original local and regional reporting, and on the other hand, to expand well-founded coverage of international events and EU politics. The program supports media projects with self-produced contributions that achieve an annual average of at least 20% regional as well as 20% international/EU content. Applications can be submitted annually by March 31; the current deadline runs from January 18, 2024, to June 30, 2029.

Requirements for approval include, among others, a division of labor organized editorial operation with a responsible editor-in-chief, at least 60% independently designed editorial content, and an Austrian distribution of at least 50%. For the application, among other documents, sample copies, a current company register or association register excerpt, a confirmation from independent auditors, as well as proof of registration in the eRTR portal and a qualified electronic signature are required. The funding agency reviews the applications together with a specialist advisory board based on defined evaluation criteria. This program creates incentives for in-depth, diverse reporting and makes an important contribution to opinion and content diversity in Austria.
