Travel Expense Subsidy for Students

The travel cost subsidy for students supports students residing throughout Austria who undertake a study stay abroad within the framework of their approved foreign study grant pursuant to § 56b StudFG. As a one-time subsidy, it covers the necessary travel expenses for the round trip to the foreign study location. The funding is continuously available and can be granted from the third semester of study up to a maximum duration of 20 months. An application must be submitted to the study grant authority no later than three months after the start of the study abroad period in order to be considered retroactively from the beginning of the stay abroad. Private applicants receive a non-repayable subsidy upon positive approval, which is paid in addition to the regular foreign study grant.

Only the directly necessary travel costs related to the study stay are funded; expenses for public transportation at the study location are considered non-reimbursable. The measure is aimed at study grant recipients who wish to gain experience and qualifications abroad during their funded studies. By partially financing travel costs, the funding helps to reduce financial barriers and increase mobility.
