Description

The Alexa Melcher and Thomas Schiffer Foundation supports master's and diploma students (after the preliminary diploma) nationwide in Germany in future-oriented fields such as natural and engineering sciences, STEM, bionics, robotics, biotechnology, genetic engineering, AI, VR/AR, medicine, medical technology, as well as selected future topics in economics, law, and social sciences. As a full-time first degree at public or state-recognized universities in Germany, students can receive monthly grants of up to 500 euros. In exceptional cases, stays abroad of up to 12 months as well as material resources are supported. Requirements include German citizenship (or EU citizenship with a successfully completed bachelor's degree in Germany), enrollment in a master's or diploma program (no second, additional, or distance learning), and an interdisciplinary orientation. Applications are submitted digitally in German or English. Required documents are enrollment certificate, CV, motivation letter, academic transcripts, letters of recommendation, and a personal data protection declaration. Application deadlines: Summer semester from November 1 to January 31 (selection by March 31), winter semester from May 1 to July 31 (selection by September 30).

The selection process considers academic and personal suitability, previous academic achievements, and a pronounced interdisciplinary mindset. A preliminary selection is made by the foundation board together with experts based on the documents; successful candidates are invited to personal interviews in which their study project, interests, and future visions are presented. The final decision is made within two weeks after the interview. An extension of funding beyond the standard period of study is possible in exceptional cases. Although there is no legal entitlement, this program offers committed early-career researchers a reliable financial basis for pioneering research and education.
