Scholarship Funding by the Youth for Understanding Foundation (German YFU Foundation)

The Youth for Understanding Foundation (German YFU Foundation) promotes intercultural exchange among students in Germany through its scholarship program. The goal is to enable young people from financially disadvantaged families as well as those with previously underrepresented social or cultural backgrounds to participate in a YFU student exchange. With a straightforward, ongoing application process, participants can apply for a grant to cover program and travel costs. Selection is based on proof of financial need, motivation and personal suitability, as well as the aspect of underrepresentation in the exchange program. In doing so, the foundation creates equal opportunities and opens the path for young people to gain intercultural experiences that sustainably strengthen their independence, sense of responsibility, and cultural competence.

The foundation sees itself as a bridge builder to ensure that international exchange stays no privilege. The application documents include a completed application form, an individual letter of motivation, and proof of financial need. The funding is granted as a one-time subsidy and supports both program costs and travel expenses. Through continuous allocation of funds, the German YFU Foundation ensures that young people from all social backgrounds gain access to worldwide learning and development opportunities and grow into open-minded, committed individuals.
