Description
The funding program “Electricity Generation in Island Mode Based on Renewable Energy Sources” supports companies, entrepreneurial organizations, associations, and religious institutions throughout Austria in establishing independent power supply systems in remote locations without grid access. Investments in photovoltaic, small hydropower, or wind power plants, combined heat and power plants, as well as electrical energy storage systems, including associated planning and installation costs, are eligible for funding. A prerequisite is that the project site is located in an island mode without grid connection and that electricity generation is based exclusively on renewable energy sources. The application must be submitted before the initial order, delivery, or start of construction; funding can commence continuously from March 1, 2024. For the application, a technical description, yield and consumption forecast, cost estimates, construction and operating permits, as well as – for investment volumes exceeding €500,000 – a report from the credit institution are required.
The aim of the initiative is to improve energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and strengthen climate protection in remote regions. A non-repayable grant cushions higher investment costs for environmentally friendly technologies. The processing is carried out by Kommunalkredit Public Consulting GmbH on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management. Project managers receive a funding contract upon positive evaluation; disbursement takes place after completion and settlement of the measure. Combining this funding with existing regional subsidies, for example in Tyrol, is possible. Further details on the application process and legal framework are provided in the comprehensive information sheet of the Environmental Funding for Domestic Projects.
