The VGH Foundation for Archaeology Study Award has been honoring outstanding master’s and doctoral theses with a clear connection to archaeology in Lower Saxony since 2023. Graduates and doctoral recipients from universities and universities of applied sciences at home and abroad are recognized for research that focuses on the archaeological sources of the region. The award, endowed with €2,000, emphasizes the importance of cultural heritage and rewards projects that pursue innovative research approaches. Eligible applicants are individuals who have completed a master’s or doctoral thesis and can demonstrate the required regional relevance. The jury particularly evaluates the innovative content of the work, its contribution to the preservation of cultural heritage, and the sustainable methodology in archaeological research.

With this study award, the VGH Foundation aims to promote scientific excellence and highlight sustainable research strategies. Application documents must be submitted by March 18, 2026, for the first committee meeting and by September 4, 2026, for the second. The foundation places great importance on complete documentation and a comprehensible demonstration of the archaeological relevance. Winners benefit, in addition to the financial prize, from increased visibility in academia and the public sphere. Institutions and research organizations are invited to recommend outstanding theses and thus contribute to strengthening the next generation of archaeological researchers in Lower Saxony.
