Description
The Horizon Europe program “Supporting pre-normative research for standardization of bio-based products” funds EU-wide, pre-compliant and pre-competitive research and development activities aimed at standardizing bio-based products. The objective is to identify gaps in standardization research, enhance ecological sustainability, and increase the competitiveness of the European bioeconomy. Grants of up to €4,000,000 are awarded (funding rate 100%). Eligible costs include personnel expenses, material costs, and subcontractor services. Evaluation criteria include innovation content, scientific excellence, and standardization potential. Research institutions, universities, industrial companies, and standardization organizations from at least three EU Member States or associated countries may apply as a consortium, provided they are registered in the Participant Register (PIC). Projects must include pre-competitive research phases, ecodesign approaches, and transparent standardization processes, and engage relevant stakeholder communities.
The call opens on 17 April 2026, with submissions accepted until 17 September 2026, and project start from 1 October 2026. Applicant consortia shall submit the application form, project description, budget plan, and CVs of key researchers electronically via the EU Funding & Tenders Portal. A preliminary analysis (Open Market Consultation) as well as standard-compliant evaluation and testing phases are integral parts of the work package to establish a solid foundation for subsequent market standardization. The combination of research results, open science practices, and participatory stakeholder dialogue aims to advance sustainable bio-based value chains with high ecological performance and market relevance.
