This Is The Modern World – the new collection presentation of Modernism

“This Is The Modern World” – the new presentation of the modern collection at the Hamburger Kunsthalle invites visitors to rediscover previously hidden treasures of the artistic avant-garde from 1900 to 1960. As a publicly funded sponsorship project from the Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the initiative aims to completely re-stage the extensive modern collection both conceptually and spatially. Through a freshly developed curatorial narrative, iconic paintings, photographs, and graphics are placed within a globally expanded context. An innovative spatial concept creates a contemporary viewing experience that unites both chronology and thematic focal points. For the first time, visitors can experience changing time capsules that spotlight key years of modernity and immerse themselves directly in artistic breakthroughs via digital offerings and an audio tour.

Funding is allocated to spatial design, technical equipment, and the development of diverse educational programs, including school formats, an exhibition film, and interactive digital tools. The curatorial conception as well as the careful selection, conservation, and reframing of works are also central to the financing. The project initiator is the Förderstiftung Hamburger Kunsthalle, which continuously acquires donations to realize modernization and educational initiatives. The funding offers artists, cultural workers, and all art enthusiasts the opportunity to become part of a sustainable museum transformation that inspires both young and experienced visitors alike and makes the modern collection newly accessible for future generations.
