Competition "Climate-Active Municipality"

The nationwide competition of the National Climate Protection Initiative honors public municipalities that generate national attention with exemplary projects in the fields of climate protection, environmental and nature conservation, as well as energy efficiency. The aim of the award is to present innovative and successfully implemented measures by cities, districts, and municipalities, to highlight their level of innovation, and thereby promote further commitment to social cohesion and sustainable energy policy. Each awarded municipality receives a €40,000 prize to enhance the impact of their concepts and serve as a role model for other project sponsors throughout Germany.

All public institutions that can demonstrate a resolved, implemented, and effective initiative in municipal climate protection are eligible to apply. Selection is based on the criteria of level of innovation, impact, and successful implementation. Submission requires a project-related description, documents on achieved results, and the formal resolution of the municipality. Deadlines for the annual application process are published on the funding provider’s website. Through visibility in this prestigious competition, committed municipalities receive not only financial support but also valuable supra-regional exchange of experience and media coverage.
