Gerd und Gisela Wäger-Stiftung

Private foundation

About the funder

On September 8, 1998, the childless couple Gerd (1919–1999) and Gisela Wäger († 2014) testamentarily established the foundation to support young people in the areas of training, further education, and advanced training. The Wäger Foundation formally came into effect in 2015 and awards scholarships independently of training providers or employers. Since 2018, the focus has been on training programs, degree courses, and further education in the healthcare sector in Hamburg. The foundation ensures that especially socially disadvantaged trainees, dual students, and those undergoing further training without entitlement to state benefits (e.g., BAföG or vocational training allowance) can realize their career aspirations in healthcare. Close cooperation with the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) guarantees direct contact and support for the target group.

Mission & Vision

The Gerd and Gisela Wäger Foundation is committed to supporting ambitious young individuals in the completion of their professional or academic training and further education in the healthcare sector in Hamburg. Our goal is to counteract social obstacles and financial barriers and to establish equal opportunities regardless of origin, family circumstances, or migration background.

Target groups

Priority is given to individuals from the Hamburg area under the age of 25 (in exceptional cases up to 35 years) who are undergoing vocational training, a dual study program, or further training in the healthcare sector and do not qualify for state educational funding. Selection is based on social need and emphasizes fairness and equal opportunity for applicants regardless of their social or financial background.
