About the funder

The Herbert and Elsbeth Weichmann Foundation is a legally recognized foundation under civil law, established in 1989 and based in Hamburg. It preserves the memory of the couple Herbert and Elsbeth Weichmann, who lived in exile from 1933 in Czechoslovakia, France, and the USA, and who, upon their return in 1948, played a significant role in the reconstruction of democracy in Germany. The foundation supports scholarly research projects on political exile, awards grants for printing costs, archival research trips, material expenses, and academic events, organizes lectures and conferences, awards the Claus-Dieter Krohn Prize for exile research, and publishes the "Writings of the Herbert and Elsbeth Weichmann Foundation."

Mission & Vision

"The sole and immediate purpose of the foundation is to commemorate the activities of the democratic opposition in exile against Hitler's totalitarian regime as well as the consequences of these activities for Germany after the war, and to preserve this memory for future generations." (Statutes § 2)
