About the funder
The Iris and Hartmut Jürgens Foundation – Chance for a New Life is a trust foundation of the University of Bremen, established by Iris Spiegelhalter-Jürgens and Hartmut Jürgens. Its aim is to promote scientific and social commitment to people in precarious life situations. The foundation awards at least €5,000 in funding annually and can additionally accept endowments and donations. The management of the foundation’s assets is handled by the University of Bremen Foundation.

Mission & Vision
We support scientific and social commitment to people in precarious life situations. This mission statement provides the framework for funding projects and individuals in the fields of medical research – particularly diagnostics and therapy of chronic and life-threatening diseases – as well as assistance for and integration of refugees.
Target groups
The foundation targets research projects and early-career scientists in the field of medical research who develop new methods for the diagnosis and treatment of severe chronic or life-threatening diseases; initiatives and volunteers who assist refugees with reception, integration, and social participation; students and graduates of funding programs such as HERE Studies; as well as individuals in precarious life situations who receive a "chance for a new life" through scientific or social measures.
