About the funder

The Manfred Engel Foundation is a non-profit legal foundation under civil law based in Bielefeld. It was established on June 6, 2003, from the estate of the geographer and secondary school teacher Oberstudienrat Manfred Engel (1934–2002). The purpose of the foundation is to provide funding for geographical regional research in the Westphalian-Lippe area and its immediate interrelated regions. To this end, it awards grants for material costs, travel expenses, contracts for work, scholarships, subsidies for the publication of research results, supports didactic teaching models, regional conferences, and awards prizes for outstanding regional geographical work.

Mission & Vision

The Manfred Engel Foundation is committed to systematically strengthening geographical regional research in the Westphalian-Lippe area. It supports scientific projects that deepen the understanding of regional structures and generate socially relevant insights. Its goal is to make research findings visible and to sustainably support regional geographical teaching as well as professional exchange.

Target groups

Tax-privileged public-law corporations and other non-profit research institutions active in the field of regional geographical research in the Westphalian-Lippe area are supported. This includes universities, research institutes, scientific conferences, lecturers, and students who plan and carry out specific projects in regional research.
