About the funder

The Nationale Klimaschutz Initiative (NKI) is a funding program of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) that has been running since 2008. It initiates and supports climate protection projects nationwide in cities, municipalities, districts, as well as in educational institutions and companies. With a variety of funding opportunities, the NKI makes a significant contribution to achieving the national climate protection targets – Germany aims to be greenhouse gas neutral by 2045. Between 2008 and June 2025, over 60,300 projects with a funding volume of approximately 2.2 billion euros have been implemented, triggering total investments of 6.9 billion euros and saving 59.4 million tons of CO₂ equivalents.

Mission & Vision

The NKI aims to make climate protection tangible and effective at the local level. It supports and initiates projects that innovatively and sustainably reduce greenhouse gas emissions, develop climate protection strategies, and serve as role models. In doing so, it strengthens the commitment of municipalities, private individuals, businesses, and civil society actors to a livable and greenhouse gas-neutral future.

Target groups

The funding programs of the NKI are aimed at citizens and civil society initiatives with innovative climate protection ideas; municipalities (cities, towns, districts) and municipal associations; businesses, companies, and other institutions with at least 25% municipal participation; educational institutions (schools, universities); as well as organizations from society, economy, and science that wish to implement local climate protection measures.
