Sergej-Mawrizki-Stiftung

Private foundation

About the funder

The Sergej Mawrizki Foundation was established in 1998 in accordance with the will of the Russian Xenia Mawrizki and bears the name of her late son Sergej. Since 2005, the non-profit foundation has been based in Berlin. Its goal is to promote cultural exchange between Germany and the countries of the former Soviet Union. The foundation supports projects across all branches of art and culture – from readings to music, dance, and theater performances to exhibitions – and has supported the International Literature Festival Berlin since 2004. In addition to financial support, it offers cultural consulting and has an extensive network of museums, galleries, and cultural centers. In its own premises at Linienstraße 154, it maintains a reading and exhibition forum, a reading room with Russian literature and audio media, as well as a GULAG memorial room in the Museum of Silence.

Mission & Vision

The Sergej Mawrizki Foundation is committed to preserving and further developing the historically rooted cultural ties between Germany and the countries of the former Soviet Union. Through financial support, advisory services, and its own event spaces, it creates platforms for artistic dialogue, thereby contributing to mutual understanding, a culture of remembrance, and awareness of democratic values – fully in line with the intentions of its founder, Xenia Mawrizki.

Target groups

Individuals, artists, groups, and institutions from Germany as well as from the former Soviet states who plan projects in the fields of literature, visual arts, music, dance, theater, and cultural mediation are supported. The target group particularly consists of actors pursuing an innovative or intercultural approach and aiming to strengthen the German-Russian or German-Soviet dialogue in contemporary formats.
