About the funder

The Foundation Opportunities and Education for Children – Erika Thomas was established in 2015 as a non-independent consumer foundation under the umbrella of the Youth and Family Foundation of the State of Berlin (jfsb). It provides up to 10,000 euros annually to support non-profit organizations in projects promoting reading and writing skills among young people. Creative, interactive methods are employed in these projects. The foundation's funds aim to help compensate for individual and social disadvantages in intellectual and cultural development. The foundation board consists of three members: two relatives of the founder and one member of the jfsb executive board.

Mission & Vision

The foundation is committed to providing children and adolescents with additional opportunities for development and strengthening their participation in social life. Its goal is to promote the joy of reading and writing through innovative approaches and thereby create equal opportunities in the long term.

Target groups

Projects of non-profit organizations aimed at children and adolescents are funded, employing creative methods to impart reading and writing skills. The target group may particularly consist of young people living outside their families (e.g., in residential groups), although this characteristic is not a mandatory requirement. Overall, all young people who can be supported in overcoming linguistic disadvantages should be addressed.
