Stiftung kampfmittelfreier Lebensraum

Private foundation

About the funder

The Stiftung kampfmittelfreier Lebensraum is a non-profit private foundation based in Erfurt that has been dedicated since 2021 to the removal of unexploded ordnance from World War II. Hidden ammunition and unexploded bombs beneath the ground and water surface continue to pose a significant threat to humans, flora, and fauna. The foundation pursues a holistic approach: it collects and systematizes data on contaminated sites, supports preventive research and educational projects, promotes university-level training in the field of ordnance disposal, and coordinates practical measures for site remediation.

Mission & Vision

Our mission is to create safe living spaces across generations while harmonizing the protection of people and the environment. We take responsibility for the sustainable restoration and clearance of areas, promote scientific research and innovative educational initiatives, and work closely with academia, politics, and industry to systematically eliminate the dangers posed by unexploded ordnance.

Target groups

The foundation's funding and educational programs are primarily aimed at students and early-career researchers from all relevant disciplines – geophysics, geosciences, chemistry, physics, biology, geography, history, and archaeology – as well as specialist companies and practitioners in explosive ordnance disposal. In addition, research institutions, training and continuing education providers, and decision-makers in politics and administration are involved as partners in projects and training events.
