About the funder

The Von Behring-Röntgen Foundation was established on September 8, 2006, by the state of Hesse as a legal foundation under civil law. With an endowment of 100 million euros, it exclusively supports university medicine at the Justus Liebig University Giessen and the Philipps University Marburg from the interest income. The foundation is headquartered in the Landgrave Castle in Marburg. It supports research projects (individual and collaborative endeavors), young scientists with scholarships and travel grants, organizes symposia, and awards junior researcher prizes, research medals, and honorary plaques.

Mission & Vision

The purpose of the Von Behring-Röntgen Foundation is to promote research and teaching in the medical faculties of Justus Liebig University Giessen and Philipps University Marburg. It aims to support excellent scientists through financial backing of innovative individual and collaborative projects, as well as through scholarships and awards, to strengthen early-career researchers and thereby sustainably secure the future of university medicine in its region.

Target groups

The foundation's funding programs are primarily aimed at early-career researchers up to a maximum age of 38 for individual projects, at scientists from both locations in Gießen and Marburg for collaborative projects, at medical students from Hesse (scholarships for top high school graduates and Deutschlandstipendien), at participants of scientific symposia, as well as at outstanding early-career researchers and lifetime achievement researchers for awards and medals.
