Funded are construction projects, acquisition, initial furnishing, and maintenance of facilities with nationwide and/or international significance. Applications are submitted via the responsible highest state authorities or the main association of the German Youth Hostel Association. The required forms are available on the websites of the BMFSFJ and the Federal Administration Office (BVA) and must be submitted in full no later than eight weeks before the planned start of construction.

Recognized providers must demonstrate their nationwide or international objectives and implementation strategies in the operating concept and must be the owner of the property or provide a secured real right of use for at least 25 years. Investment funds may only be used for their designated purpose, and all reasonable financing sources must be exhausted prior to application.
