Description

The GAK broadband funding program specifically supports the state of Hesse in equipping underserved rural areas with modern gigabit infrastructure. Public institutions in the form of municipalities and municipal associations can apply for grants to close the economic viability gap in the expansion of wired and wireless broadband networks. Funding is provided not only for investments in fiber optic and wireless technologies but also for the laying of empty conduits, feasibility studies, as well as planning and consulting services. By doubling the previous download and upload capacities, a sustainable, cost-effective, and high-quality broadband supply is to be ensured. Currently, however, the program is not open for applications.

The funding is provided as a non-repayable grant with a funding rate of up to 90% of eligible expenses (excluding VAT). A prerequisite for submitting an application to the Wirtschafts- und Infrastrukturbank Hessen is that the project has not yet commenced and that the location is within the GAK funding area. A market exploration procedure must demonstrate that no sufficient coverage by third parties is expected within the next three years. Furthermore, proof is required that the planned measures will lead to a significant improvement in network quality and are awarded through a public, transparent selection process. The legal basis is formed by the GAK Act, the GAK framework plan, and the directive for promoting gigabit supply in Hesse. Interested municipalities can obtain information about the further procedure from WIBank and submit their project documents.
