Description
The federal funding for municipal climate protection from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy has been supporting strategic and investment-based climate protection projects in cities, municipalities, and districts nationwide since November 2024. The focus is on measures to reduce greenhouse gases and the expansion of sustainable energy and mobility infrastructures. Funding is provided, among other things, for consulting services in the field of climate protection, feasibility studies, climate protection coordination and management, as well as concepts for digitalization and smart cities. Investment measures may include the renovation of outdoor, indoor, and street lighting, the establishment of climate-friendly mobility stations, waste and wastewater management, or the renewal of drinking water supply systems. Funding rates vary depending on the measure between 25% and 90%, with financially weak municipalities and lignite mining regions receiving higher subsidies.
Eligible applicants include, in addition to municipalities, their legally independent enterprises, special-purpose associations, as well as public, non-profit, and charitable organizations in the education, health, and social sectors. Documents such as the easy online form, a detailed project description, and, if applicable, the KRL online form are submitted digitally. The application period runs continuously from February 1, 2025, to December 31, 2027, with project commencement possible as early as November 2024. A funding approval is issued after verification of all funding requirements; only then may procurement procedures be initiated and contracts concluded. The objective of the measure is to initiate locally effective climate protection projects, secure jobs, and strengthen municipal value creation through energy-efficient investments.
