Description
The announced funding from the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology and Space supports the establishment of an interdisciplinary innovation hub in the field of cell cultivation and precision fermentation for the production of novel foods. The goal is the joint development of platform technologies that enable biotechnologically produced alternatives to conventional milk, meat, and fish products. Funded are research projects aimed at efficient raw material utilization, scalability, and process stability, as well as accompanying measures for technology transfer to industry. These include, for example, the development of stable cell culture systems, modular production processes, real-time sensor technology, and concepts for mobilizing private capital. For the concept phase, funds of up to 60,000 euros are available for individual projects; in the subsequent implementation phase, consortia can apply for up to 15 million euros in total. The funding period spans six years in two three-year phases, with an interim evaluation following the concept phase.
Eligible to participate are consortia from leading research institutions, companies, and start-ups with headquarters or branches in Germany, who can demonstrate scientific and technical expertise in the field of cell cultivation or precision fermentation and involve economic partners. Selection is based on the research and technology infrastructure, the amount of private investment, the ambition and measurability of milestones, as well as the structure and networking of the innovation hub. Project outlines (maximum three pages) can be submitted via the electronic application system easy-Online by 09.07.2026. Applicants will receive feedback within one week regarding admission to the concept phase, which is scheduled to begin on 01.09.2026. This call offers a unique opportunity to assume a leading role in food biotechnology innovations in Germany and to accelerate the transfer of research results into marketable products.
