Description

The funding program of the State Ministry for Health, Care and Prevention supports highly rated spa resorts, health spas, as well as recognized healing spring and peat spa operations in Bavaria in conducting scientific studies and empirical investigations to secure evidence and improve medical outcome quality. Funding is provided to municipal and private sponsors – ranging from individual enterprises and non-profit organizations to public institutions and educational establishments – that incorporate natural remedies or spa-specific procedures according to their rating into a coherently justified overall concept. The aim is to evaluate patient-relevant effects such as health status, quality of life, well-being, pain reduction, and mobility, as well as to develop and test new treatment methods. Projects can be supported with a funding amount of up to 500,000 euros; the funding covers 50%–70% of eligible personnel, material, and investment expenses. A minimum own contribution of 10% is required. The maximum project duration is 36 months, and a minimum budget of 100,000 euros per project is a prerequisite for applications submitted by 31.12.2026.

Particularly supported are studies on the effectiveness of therapeutic, rehabilitative, preventive, and health-promoting measures in spa environments, as well as investigations into environmentally and lifestyle-related chronic diseases. Digital technologies and infrastructure measures for data collection or intervention testing are also eligible for funding, provided they are necessary for the project. Primarily touristic or wellness-oriented measures are not supported. Applications can be submitted to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety; in addition to the project outline and financing plan, declarations on de minimis aid as well as planning documents and building law certificates must be attached in the case of construction measures. The funding aims to strengthen the medical quality in Bavarian spa resorts and health spas in the long term and to expand the future viability of Bavaria as a health location.
