Description

Funding for stationary hydrogen-based energy systems with photovoltaics
In North Rhine-Westphalia, a forward-looking funding program is now available to support the development of climate-friendly building energy supplies using hydrogen technology and solar power. Eligible applicants include municipalities, districts, public institutions, private individuals, companies of all sizes, schools, universities, cooperatives, associations, and clubs based in NRW. Funding is provided for systemic overall solutions consisting of a market-available electrolyzer (up to 10 normal cubic meters H₂/h), a hydrogen storage system (up to 500 kg H₂), a hydrogen-based energy converter (e.g., fuel cell or heating boiler), as well as a photovoltaic system whose electrical output does not fall below that of the electrolyzer. A detailed system description with professional design by qualified experts is required. The grant is provided as a subsidy of up to 40% of eligible expenses and is capped at a maximum of €100,000 per system. Eligible costs include electrolyzer, storage, photovoltaic components, planning, installation, and commissioning. The integration of CE-marked technology and safety certifications must be demonstrated.

Application procedures and deadline
The program runs until June 30, 2027, and applications are processed via the electronic application form on the NRW funding portal. In addition to the detailed system description, cost estimates, manufacturer declarations, and specialist contractor declarations must be submitted. The decision is based on the professional design of the overall system and the proportionality of electrolyzer to PV capacity. Upon positive evaluation, the funding authority issues a grant approval notice, which excludes the commencement of measures prior to approval. The subsidy is paid out upon completion and positive verification of the proof of use. This funding offer makes an important contribution to the energy transition and climate protection in North Rhine-Westphalia.
