Description

The Herbert and Elsbeth Weichmann Foundation supports scientific projects nationwide that research political exile during the National Socialist era. Funding is provided for publication subsidies for monographs, dissertations, and anthologies, grants for archival research trips and material expenses, as well as subsidies for conferences, colloquia, and discussion forums. Eligible applicants include private individuals, educational institutions, and non-profit organizations—particularly doctoral candidates, postdoctoral researchers, scholars, and research institutions. Applications must be submitted electronically by email to the Foundation’s office, including a signed funding application, project description and timeline, curriculum vitae, and, if applicable, peer review recommendations, publishing contract offers, or event programs including a financing plan. Application deadlines are March 1 for the spring session and September 1 for the autumn session of the Scientific Advisory Board.

The selection is based on alignment with the Foundation’s purpose, the degree of innovation, the quality of the research question, as well as the applicant’s own contribution and cost share. In addition to traditional research approaches, the Foundation also supports projects that test new methods, open interdisciplinary perspectives, or incorporate literary and artistic engagements with Nazi rule and exile. The aim is to keep alive the memory of the democratic opposition in exile and to inspire future generations for this research. The Weichmann Foundation thus offers ongoing funding opportunities for all who wish to sustainably advance exile research in Germany.
