Description
The community fund "Strengthening Democracy" of the BürgerStiftung Hamburg supports non-profit associations, initiatives, and small organizations in selected districts in the eastern and southwestern parts of Hamburg. The goal is to strengthen social cohesion, increase media literacy, and expand the digital visibility of pro-democratic actors. Projects that convey democratic values such as solidarity, respect, and non-violence and counteract anti-democratic division are supported. Requirements for funding include having a seat or activity in the defined districts as well as registration as a user on the BürgerStiftung Hamburg's online platform. The fund explicitly targets civil society actors who identify local needs and wish to develop tailored offerings.
Applications are submitted in three phases to address different focal points: Phase 1 focuses on district-related democracy promotion (submission by 31.12.2025, project start from 01.03.2026), Phase 2 targets target-group-specific offerings (deadline 31.03.2026, project start from 01.05.2026), and Phase 3 strengthens media literacy and digital visibility (submission by 30.06.2026, projects from 01.08.2026). The type of funding is a purpose-bound grant, for which a completed application form and a subsequent proof of use must be submitted. BürgerStiftung Hamburg emphasizes a low-threshold process: after registration as a user, the online application form is available. The foundation’s advisory board decides on the allocation of funds. Initiatives and associations that wish to strengthen democratic cohesion in particularly affected neighborhoods will find reliable support here for sustainable engagement.
